Debra graduated with honors from the University of Massachusetts in 1980 with a BA in Art History. Her focus was on Islamic art.
She is primarily self taught and has also studied with various artists also native to Western Mass.. Explorations have included watercolors, pastels, calligraphy, acrylics, and oils. Nature and immediate experience have always been, and continue to be, the main inspirations of her work. As with her healing work, increased awareness and vision are the objectives.
Debra is very interested in the possibilities presented by collaboration. This interest has been honed by a dialogue drawing group of which she has been a part since 2003. This group provided her with the impetus to begin painting again after a hiatus of a number of years. Other influences are the Impressionists, the Abstract Expressionists, textiles, pictographs of the Southwest, and the endless forms, colors, and patterns expressed by the natural world.
Her work has been exhibited most recently at Franklin Medical Center’s ‘Healing Center’ in Greenfield, Mass., she has exhibited in Vermont and Massachusetts galleries, and has work in private collections.
